It is important to underline that simple comparisons of population rates should be made with caution since there are still differences in case definitions in a few countries and quality of reporting may differ across them.
The calculations of population mortality rates are based on 2006 population sizes as reported by Eurostat.
For Czech Republic, EMCDDA Selection D was used instead of the national definition. For Romania, data refer only to Bucharest and several counties in the competence area of the Toxicology laboratory from Bucharest.
For Portugal, data include all cases with post mortem analysis positive for any drug of abuse, which is likely to produce an overestimate compared to selection D.
"n" refers to the total number of deaths.
