Figure GPS-20. Lifetime and last 12 months prevalence of cocaine use among young adults (aged 15–34) in Europe, Canada, Australia and the USA

Notes:

Data are from the most recent national surveys available in each country (see General population survey tables, EMCDDA Statistical bulletin 2011).

Countries have been sorted according to lifetime prevalence of cocaine.

In the European Member States, most surveys were conducted between 2004 and 2009, and the standard age range is 15 to 34 (in some countries the lower end may be 16 or 18 years).

The European average prevalence rate was calculated as the average of the national prevalence rates weighted by national population of 15- to 34-year olds (2007, taken from Eurostat).

In the USA, the survey was conducted in 2009, and the age range is 16 to 34 years (recalculated from original data).

In Canada, the survey was conducted in 2009, and the age range is 15 to 34 years (recalculated from original data). Note that estimate has a coefficient of variation of .17, which means that the estimate should be considered “qualified”.

For Australia, the survey was conducted in 2007, and the age range is 14 to 39 years (recalculated from original data).

Variations in age ranges may slightly influence disparities between countries.

The most recent General population surveys reported by the Czech Republic display a wide variation in results, the reason for which is being explored, but may be due to differing sampling methods.  The data is provided for information, but given the lack of comparability between surveys should be treated with caution.
