Notes:

Where data are not available for a country, the table entry is left empty.

For further information on client population covered, estimation processes and other notes by country see part (iii).

(1) The number of "All substitution clients" in Bulgaria includes 148 Substitol clients.

(2) The number of buprenorphine clients in the Czech Republic is estimated based on the distributed quantity of HDB on the Czech market (in 2010, a quantity of Subutex® and Suboxone® equivalent to 3517 g) and the avarage daily dose.

(3) The number of "All substitution clients" in Germany includes 232 clients receiving diacetylmorphine treatment and 309 clients on other subsitution medications.

(4) A very small number of cases received buprenorphine, as part of a pilot study. The overall proportion of buprenorphine substitution is estimated at less than 0.1% of all opioid substitution treatment.

(5) The difference between the total number of clients in opioid substitution treatment (6 264) and the calculated total (6 943), is due to the fact that in substitution units, clients often change from one substitution drug to another depending on their phase of treatment, so it is impossible to exclude the double records between the substitution drugs.

(6) 2009 data.

(7) The number of "All substitution clients" in Italy includes 901 clients in Naltrexone and 611 in Clonidine.

(8) The number of "All substitution clients" in Cyprus includes 136 DHC clients and 47 clients treated with Naltrexone, Oxyxontin and a combination of Methadone/ Buprenorphine/ Naltrexone .

(9) The number of clients is based on a census conducted on the 31 December 2010, thus the total number of clients treated during the year is estimated to be higher.

(10) The number of clients in Hungary includes both substitution and detoxification clients.

(11) The number of "All substitution clients" in Malta includes 50 clients receiving unspecified substitution medication.

(12) Although buprenorphine treatment and heroin-assisted treatment are indicated for clients for whom methadone treatment did not show sufficient results, there are overlaps in the registration of the clients receiving these treatments therefore leading to some double counting.

(13) The difference between the total number of clients in opioid substitution treatment (2114) and the calculated total (2142) is due to clients that during the same year switch from one substitution medication to anothere. Data by substitution drug of these clients will occur twice (but always separately as no cases when one person receives both methadone and buprenorphine).

(14) In addition to the registries data, the IDT performed a census on 31 December 2010. There were 21 110 clients registered in opioid maintenance programs in outpatient units by IDT: 16287 clients receiving methadone and 4823 receiving buprenorphine.

(15) The number of "All substitution clients" in Romania includes 555 in treatment with an opiate agonist and 44 with an opioid antagonist; 2 clients received unspecified substitution medication

(16) The number of "All substitution clients" in Slovenia includes 258 clients receiving slow-release morphine.

(17) 2009 data. There is no routine data collection in place and data is based on ad hoc reports.

(18) 2007 data.

(19) 2009-2010 data.

(20) 2007 data.

(21) 2009-2010 data.

(22) The difference between the total number of clients in opioid substitution treatment (6 015) and the calculated total (5 949), is due to non-registered treatments with morphine sulphate (Dolcontin) and morphine sulphate (Dolcontin).
