Drug availability and drug markets

The principal indicator used for drug availability in the first section of these tables is the quantity and number of drug seizures made by police and customs officials, figures that are available for many countries historically over the longer term. A second section gives information for 2002 on street-level prices for these drugs and also gives changes in potency levels of cannabis over the short-term for the countries that are able to provide this information.

Seizures data

Tables Markets-1 to Markets-12 show reported drug seizures by country, where data are available, for the major drug types of interest by both quantities seized and numbers of seizures. Part (i) of each table gives historical, medium-term data for 1994 to 2002 and Part (ii) of the table gives a longer historical run of figures from 1985.

Table Markets-13 is a summary table for 2002 of the numbers of seizures and quantity seized, by country, of each drug type.
  • Table Markets-13. Drug seizures in 2002: numbers of seizures and total quantity

Prices and purity/potency information

Table Markets-14 gives information on the price in 2002 - minimum, maximum and average as determined by the quoted sources - of the major drug types: cannabis (both leaves and resin), heroin (both brown and white), cocaine (both powder and crack), ecstasy, other amphetamines and LSD.

Tables Markets-15 and Markets-16 give potency information specifically for cannabis - both resin and leaves, respectively - in terms of percent THC content, showing the historical changes over the short-term.
  • Table Markets-15. Average potency of cannabis resin at retail level, measured as percentage THC content from 1998 to 2002
  • Table Markets-16. Average potency of herbal cannabis at retail level, measured as percentage THC content 1998 to 2002
